We all knew it; however, the statement seems more valid after Daily Time’s this survey that concludes:

Pakistani office going community loves the Facebook, the most, out of all other tim wasting activities.

The previous office time waster king was the MSN, Yahoo Messengers but over the years web applications have been developed that diverted the Internet traffic from these messengers.
But even the bosses know that blocking these web sites would create frustration among the employees as they get a chance to refresh themselves just by checking their account on Facebook for a few minutes.
You may consider blocking Facebook, if you are boss and if you feel like a lot of amusement going around with less work in your office.
Interestingly, the people contacted for comments, wished not to be named as it could affect the repute of their organizations and they would be termed as “less professional”.

1.Let your PC boot up completely before opening any applications.

2.Refresh the desktop after closing any application. This will remove any unused files from the RAM.

3.Do not set very large file size images as your wallpaper. Do not keep a wallpaper at all if your PC is low on RAM (less than 64 MB).

5.Empty the recycle bin regularly. The files are not really deleted from your hard drive until you empty the recycle bin.

6.Delete the temporary internet files regularly.

Mobile handset import bill up 100%: FBS

The gadgets imports’ cost is also 27 percent high compared with the month of June when it reached US $ 30.8 million.

The demand of handsets in the country has increased its imports sharply as reported almost 100 percent in terms of its imported cost in the first month of current fiscal year 2010-11, July.
Federal Bureau of Statistics figures showed the import bill of mobile handset reached US $ 39 million dollar in the month of July as against the same months cost stood at $ 19.59 million last year, showing 99.15 percent growth.
The ballooning handset import bill depicted increasing number of handset units of different brand particularly Chinese-made mobile handsets. Also, the impact of devaluation of rupee against dollar has contributed its impact to double the amount of handsets imports.
The demand has been witnessed constant surge in the last fiscal year 2009-10 as its high demand of purchasers in domestic markets despite the duty has been maintained at Rs250 per unit.
The Ramadan is also considered one of the sales season as buyers purchase are reportedly surge before and after Eid.
Imran Zaki, Head of Marketing, LG electronics, said the market’s demand is continuously surging particularly the entry stage segment, which includes lowest cost handsets ranging from Rs1,200 to Rs1,700.
He said the demand of Chinese-manufactured handsets have been getting popularity since it entered in the market some two and half years ago. Its popularity is getting more popularity among the customers because of its dual SIMs options and copycat version of branded handsets.
On the other hand, branded mobile handsets such as Nokia, LG and Samsung have also maintained its market in the limited section of the society.
Some of them have also introduced their lowest cost handsets in the market while some brands are still very popular in its market of elite class, he added.

It will cost you a few dollars to buy your domain name and set up a web server that will host your blog, but the benefits will far outweigh the cost involved. It can literally be as little as $20 a year we’re talking about here – and that buys you total freedom.

One great way to do this is to submit it to as many of the social bookmarking sites as possible. You can also join social networking sites and build a profile which contains a link to your blog. And once you’re more established you can offer ad space on your blog too, and charge a fee for both classified and display ads if you wish. What could be better than setting your own price?
But there is one final step you can take with your blog if you enjoy a change of scene every now and again. You can sell your blog! Once it is established and has plenty of revenue and traffic, you can usually sell it for ten times its monthly revenue.

Is there a mobile phone that we can say is a Blackberry killer? I doubt about that. The variety of smart phones that Blackberry released successfully competed with some good smart phones that came out and people thought were Blackberry killers. Blackberry Storm, Curve, Pearl and Bold stayed in top 10 best selling smart phones this year. The fact of the matter is that Blackberry still holds number one spot when it comes to smart phones industry but who is the biggest threat for Blackberry Smart phones? Apple’s iPhone in my opinion is the only competitor for Blackberry and there are many reasons, let us have a look.

IDC report says it all

According to a recent IDC report Blackberry Curve outsold the iPhone and stood at number one in the best selling smart phone chart. RIM claimed 4 from top 6 spots which is amazing. But the fact that Apple claimed two spots in top 6 with two versions (models) of one phone is alarming. There are many reasons why iPhone was not a winner and I will share some in this article but what if Apple releases more variations of iPhone and even more phones other than iPhone? They have already made a big name in smart phone industry after introducing iPhone, their only shot so far.

The reasons iPhone is not top seller smart phone in 2009

There are many reasons of Curve being top seller and iPhone being on number two. Two reasons that Rose Rubbin, an analyst for researchers at The NPD Group came up were that “Verzion’s buy one, get one free offer on Curve” and “Curve is available through four major carriers while you could get iPhone on AT&T only” . There is a big market for iPhone in future to go on many more carriers and come up with exciting offers. Apple can work on both of these things in future and may come up with great deals and offers.

iPhone is here to stay

Among Blackberry competitors, iPhone is the only phone that is here to stay. Apple will come up with more models of iPhone where as other phones like N97 from Nokia, Palm Pre etc has not that charm and will go down in chart in future. Some people think the touch only feature of iPhone is a weakness of iPhone and Apple may come up with another design or even another phone to target people who think QWERTY thumb board is stylish on a smart phone.
This is challenging for Blackberry that iPhone is improving with every model and Apple has done it in the past when people were claiming that iPod can not get any better and they came up with iPod touch.

iPhone Applications rock

iPhone is the only competitor of Blackberry phones with so many great apps that convert iPhone in a gaming machine and much more. The great apps will continue to come out as Apple has a big market for Apps because of iPod touch to target. Some free amazing applications are another reason for people to go for an iPhone. Blackberry can be more productive in this sector.

BUT Blackberry has the edge

RIM has an edge in Smart phone industry with variety of smart phones to target people with different tastes and opinions. Blackberry will continue to stay in top spots unless Apple comes up with other variations of iPhone or even other phones based on new ideas.
Apple has it all to give Blackberry a tough time including style, ease of use and putting many things along with a phone (good music player, great gaming machine and variety of apps). so the competition is about to get tougher for RIM.

BusinessWeek found some information about Google Voice in a response to an inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission, an independent agency of the United States government:

"Google Voice, which provides people with a single phone number that can be used to reach them on their work, home, or cell phones, has 1.419 million users, according to the letter. Of those, 570,000 use it seven days a week, Google says."

The service is still limited to the US and it's available by invitation. Google Voice users can invite other users from the web interface.

Google now offers an additional version of the service for those who want to use their existing phone numbers. This version is more limited and it only offers voicemail-related features and international calling.

"Google Voice charges only for outbound calls to international locations; at present, fewer than 4% of all Google Voice users place outbound international calls," explains Google.

Since finishing runners-up to Australia in the Champions Trophy last month, New Zealand?s problems have multiplied, following injuries to key players and the sudden departure of coach Andy Moles.
Moles’s resignation after differences with some of the players has left a void, but skipper Daniel Vettori is confident his team are capable of rising to the occasion.
“Now every single person in the squad has to pick up a little bit of the slack,” Vettori said when asked about the team’s being without a coach.
“People will still expect us to win, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t, and that’s the mindset that we have to have going,” said Vettori who will be an acting-coach as well as a selector and the team?s leading all-rounder.
The Black Caps will also be without hard-hitting opener Jesse Ryder, all-rounder Grant Elliott and pace spearhead Daryl Tuffey — all nursing injuries. Their places go to the uncapped Bradley-John Watling, recalled Scott Styris and fast bowler Tim Southee.

The New Zealand captain said both sides were struggling with their form.

Step 1: Getting some bootsectors

To be able to boot rom a device we need so called bootsectors.
The simple explanation is this: When the PC starts, the BIOS will scan the indicated storage devices and look for these bootsectors. They contain information for the BIOS to be able to start from this device. Bootsectors can be found on all bootable media (harddisk, floopy disk, CDRom, etc).

Option 1 - Using a floppy disk formatted in Windows

Before we can make a USB device bootable (specifically refering to USB thumbdrives!), we do need to get our hands on a bootable floppy. In all current Windows versions (including Windows 2000 and XP) we can do that by formatting a floppy disk.

Open the Windows Explorer and right click the A: drive.

Choose "Format..." from the upcoming popup menu.

A window appears with some option: Check the option "Create an MS-DOS startup disk".
Verify if Windows is indeed formatting the right drive! Usually it should show "Format 3½ Floppy (A:)".
Once you're sure about the drive, click the "Start" button - Windows will now format the disk and make it bootable.

Windows - Creating a bootable floppy

After creating this bootable floppy, we will now extract the bootsectors from this floppy using Bart's MKBT.

Open a DOS Window and go to the directory where you extracted MKBT.
Type mkbt -c a: bootsect.bin as shown below (yellow text).

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe

D:\Downloads\mkbt20>mkbt -c a: bootsect.bin
* Copy bootsector mode (-c)

D:\Downloads\mkbt20>

Note: Here "a:" represents the drive that holds the newly made bootable floppy!

Once the command prompt returns, you will have a bootsector stored in the file "bootsect.bin".

Do not close this DOS window yet, we will need it again in step 3!

Option 2 - Using images of bootable floppies

On the Internet you can find a lot of bootable disks. Take a look at the BootCD.info website.
You will find plenty of floppy disk images and tools to write these images to floppy disk.
Most of these disks are specialized, for example direct network access, packed with handy tools, etc.
Follow the instructions there on how to make a bootable floppy.

One of the best network enabled bootdisks is "Bart's Network Boot Disk".
I highly recommend this disk for the advanced user!

Tip: Some .BAT files refer to the A: drive directly - this CAN cause problems during boot!

Step 2: Preparing the Thumbdrive

Format the tumbdrive in the same format you formatted the floppy disk (which is FAT!).
So if you used the option where we created a bootable floppy in Windows, the format the thumbdrive using FAT or FAT16.
You can try NTFS or FAT32, but I have to say that both faioled on the thumbdrives I tried.

Right click the drive letter of the thumbdrive and select the option "Format...".

Select the proper format (FAT) and click "Start".

Step 3: Copy the bootsectors to the ThumbDrive

Thanks to MKBT by Bart (visit his website for more fun tools!) we can now easily copy the bootsectors onto the USB thumbdrive.

How to boot from a USB device ...

USB - Universal Serial Bus - is a standard for connecting additional equipment to your computer, like printers, scanners, webcam's, digital camera's, keyboards, mouse, harddisks, etc. For more details, please read this article. One of these devices is the Thumbdrive, keychange disk, USB pen, etc however you want to call them. We'd like to use one of those to boot our PC from.

Meer en meer PC's staan het toe van een dergelijke thumbdrive te starten. Maar helemaal vlekkeloss en eenvoudig is dit niet. In dit artikel focussen we dus op een dergelijke thumbdrive. We willen deze drive voorbereiden vanuit iedere gewenste Windows versie (Ik deed het met Windows XP), d.m.v. MKBT.

Tip: niet alle PC's zijn instaat van een USB disk te starten. Kijk of jouw PC dit kan door te kijken welke BIOS instellingen beschikbaar zijn. Update eventueel de BIOS van je PC.

Open a DOS Window and go to the directory where you extracted MKBT (if you haven't done so in step 1, or in case you closed the DOS window in step 1).

Type mkbt -x bootsect.bin G: as shown below (yellow text). Make SURE that you set the right drive letter here!
"G:" represents the thumbdrive! So if your thumbdrive has another drive letter, then change the "G" accordingly!

!! AGAIN: MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE RIGHT DRIVE LETTER !!
Here "G:" represents the thumbdrive!

Once the command prompt returns, you will have a bootsector on your thumbdrive.

Step 4: Copy files to the thumbdrive

Once the drive is bootable, it would be nice to have some essential files on it, for the computer to make sense.
Copy all the files of the A: drive (from Step 1, either option 1 or 2) to the thumbdrive.
Naturally the boot floppy used to extract the bootsectors from should be in that A: drive.

Tip: if the boot floppy has a *.BAT or a CONFIG.SYS file, you might want to check if it uses absolute paths (ie. A:\...) or relative paths (ie. \...). Any reference directly to the A: drive might cause issues during boot!

Step 5: Restart and go into the BIOS

Now shutdown/restart your PC and go into the BIOS.

Entering the BIOS is commonly done by pressing the "Del" button on your keyboard.

Tip: Alternatives are "F1", "F2", "Insert", and "F10". Your PC's BIOS might even require a different key to be pressed. Commonly a PC will show a message like "Press [Del] to enter Setup" to indicate that you need to press the "Del" key.
Watch the boot screen carefully. Usually the BIOS shows you which key to press. Or refer the manual of the mainboard/PC.

Note: Some laptops allow you to set the boot devices using a Windows application. Toshiba for example does this with some of their laptops. The application is either a standalone application or a applet in the Control Panel.

Step 6: BIOS settings

Depending on the BIOS of your computer, you can set the USB stick as a boot device.
If your PC's BIOS does not seem to support this, check if there is an update for the available BIOS!
Your milage may vary :-)

For some reason most BIOS'es prefer to refer to the thumbdrive as a USB Removable Floppy Disk or USB Zip Disk.
Please email me settings if you found settings that work for a particular BIOS.
Please DO NOT send me questions. Please ask them in the FORUM so others can read the replies as well.

Tip: Some AMI BIOSes require you to enable the option "USB Keyboard Legacy support"!
For example: the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe - with thanks for the tip to Fernando from Spain!

Generic approach

If your BIOS is not in the list below, or the settings do not seem to work with your PC, then do this:

- Go into the BIOS
- Go to the page that determines the boot order (usually called "Advanced Setup", "Boot options", or "Feature Setup")
- Try all USB drive variants. Start with "USB ZIP", then "USB FDD", "USB HDD ", etc.
- To speed up the testing, DISABLE ALL other boot devices. This goes for the 2nd, 3rd etc, but also for so called "Alternative boot devices".

AMI BIOS

Depending on the version of your AMI-BIOS (enter using the "Del" button):

Option 1;
This refers to an AMI-BIOS I found on my own spare computer.
AMI refers to it as "AMIBIOS SIMPLE SETYP UTILITY - VERSION 1.21.12".
(version number may vary)

Go to "Feature Setup".
"Enable" these options: "USB Function Support", "USB Function For DOS" and "ThumbDrive for DOS".

Go to "Advanced Setup".
Set the "1st Boot Device" to "USB RMD-FDD".

Reboot the PC and it now should boot from the Thumbdrive.

Option 2;
Settings I found on a German website (www.chip.de).

Go to "USB Mass Storage Device Configuration".
Select "Emulation Type" and set it to "Harddisk".
Go to the "Boot Menu" and set the "1st boot device" to "USB-Stick".
No you can exit the BIOS, saving the changes. If this does not seem to work, then you can try (it sometimes seems to work) setting the "Emulation Type" value to "Floppy" or "Forced FDD".

PHOENIX/AWARD BIOS

On my Shuttle XPC (SN85G4), the Phoenix/Award BIOS:

Go to "Advanced BIOS Features".
Go to the "1st Boot device" and set it to "USB-ZIP".

Tip from Daniel Butler: I have a Phoenix BIOS, Revision 6. After a lot of frustration, I found that you need to go to the Boot Order screen and select "Harddisk" and hit enter, giving you a list of IDE hard drives - for some reason, this BIOS prefers to call a USB device an IDE harddrive...but whatever. :

Just launch REGEDIT.

AVI File Fix in Windows XP

If you have any AVI files that you saved in Windows 9x, which have interference when opened in Windows XP, there is an easy fix to get rid of the interference: Open Windows Movie Maker. 1. Konqueror- Konqueror is a web browser, file manager and file viewer designed as a core part of the K Desktop Environment. It is developed by volunteers and can run on most Unix-like operating systems.

2. Lynx- Lynx, and its derivatives Links and Elinks, is a text-mode web browser. Lynx 2.8.5 runs on Un*x, VMS, Windows 95/98/NT, DOS386+ but not 3.1, 3.11, or OS/2 EMX.

3. Thunderbird- Thunderbird is a good quality graphical email client that uses the GTK toolkit but is not tied to any particular desktop environment. It has pretty much all the features you would expect to find in such a program: mailing list handling, encryption and digital signatures for outgoing and incoming mails and plenty of filtering options.

4. KMail is the email component of Kontact, the integrated personal information manager of KDE.

Evolution- Evolution is the most feature-rich of the mailers we looked at – at least as they were set up out of the box – largely because of the comprehensive range of plugins provided, although the one to play audio attachments could get a little tiresome, especially if deployed in a large office.

6. OpenOffice.org- OpenOffice.org is a cross-platform office application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. It supports the ISO standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office ‘97–2003 formats, Microsoft Office 2007 format among others.

7. KOffice- KOffice is an office suite for the K Desktop Environment (KDE). All its components are released under free software/open source licenses. KOffice applications use OpenDocument as their native file format when possible and the suite is released separately from KDE and can be downloaded at the KOffice homepage.

8. MPlayer- MPlayer is a free and open source media player distributed under the GNU General Public License. The program is available for all major operating systems, including Linux and other Unix-like systems, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Versions for OS/2, Syllable, AmigaOS and MorphOS are also available. The Windows versions works, with some minor problems, also in DOS using HX DOS Extender. A port for DOS using DJGPP is also available.

9. Totem- Totem is the official movie player of the GNOME desktop environment based on xine-lib or GStreamer. It features a playlist, a full-screen mode, seek and volume controls, as well as keyboard navigation.

10. Gedit- gedit is a free software, UTF-8 compatible text editor for the GNOME desktop environment. It is mainly designed for editing program code, and structured text, such as markup languages. It is designed to have a clean, simple graphical user interface according to the philosophy of the GNOME project
